Via Cordata du Hourat — Laruns
A more secluded via, just above Laruns. No continuous cable or sealed rungs, but natural rock climbed roped to the instructor. The spirit of alpine climbing, short version.
The mountain spirit, with direct access
The via cordata du Hourat differs from classic via ferrata: here, there’s no fixed equipment. You move on natural rock, roped to the instructor who belays from above on each pitch. It requires a bit more mental commitment, but the experience is purer, more connected to the rock.
A half-day to experience real commitment
The Hourat takes place over a half-day, with a short approach (5 minutes). You follow a long traverse on compact limestone rock, in the atmosphere of a small mountain wall. Étienne climbs first, places the protection, and belays you from the anchor. You move forward with confidence, on sections where the climbing level remains very accessible (3 to 4a).
Today, he dedicates all his activity to professional outdoor instruction in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, which he knows by heart. Canyoning, cliff climbing, multi-pitch climbing, via ferrata: his field of action covers all vertical and aquatic activities in the region.
Who is this route for?
The via cordata is particularly suited to hikers who want to experience verticality without committing to a complex multi-pitch climb, and to classic via ferrata enthusiasts looking for something a bit more raw. It’s also an excellent way for Étienne to assess a future multi-pitch climber.
