Bitet Canyon —
Committing Level

The classic major canyon of Ossau. Highly committing, successive rappels, enclosed and mineral atmosphere. A full day reserved for experienced practitioners seeking a true adventure.

Level 4 · Committing

The reference canyon of Ossau

Bitet is one of the most iconic canyons in the Pyrenees. It unfolds over several hours through narrow gorges, with around ten successive rappels, committing jumps, and a spectacular mineral environment. Once you’re committed to Bitet, there’s no turning back: that’s what makes it so valuable.

A committing experience

Bitet is not a canyon you simply discover—it’s a descent you earn. The rappels follow one after another with no escape, some plunge directly into deep pools, others take place in the heart of the waterfall itself. The flow, even in summer, remains strong. It’s this commitment that makes Bitet a legendary canyon among practitioners.

A unique atmosphere in France

Beyond the technical performance, Bitet offers an atmosphere rarely matched. The gorges narrow to the point where you can no longer see the sky, the water takes on deep hues, the mineral dominates everything. It’s a journey in its own right, one you emerge from transformed.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently

asked questions

Étienne asks you a few specific questions before booking: number of canyons already completed, difficulty level, comfort on ropes. If any doubt remains, he suggests a descent of Soussouéou beforehand to validate your level.

Committing doesn’t mean dangerous. With professional guidance, proper equipment, careful assessment of conditions, and a group at the right level, Bitet can be descended safely. It’s the mental commitment—knowing you can’t stop—that gives it its reputation.
