Climbing as a vertical adventure
Multi-pitch climbing changes everything. You are no longer just climbing a single pitch; you are linking them together. You ascend, organize yourself at the belay station, and set off again. Managing equipment, time, and fatigue becomes an integral part of the ascent. This is climbing in its most complete form, the one closest to mountaineering.
La Mâture, Riglos, and other classics
La Mâture, in the Aspe Valley, offers routes from 100 to 200 meters in a unique atmosphere: the cliff is notched by a path carved in the 18th century for the exploitation of naval timber, and you climb right next to it. The rock is highly aesthetic limestone.
Riglos, located 2.5 hours from Pau in Spanish Aragon, is a legendary site. Orange conglomerate, 300-meter vertical walls, and iconic routes like the Fiesta de los Biceps. Étienne takes independent climbers there for exceptional days out.
Prerequisites
To start multi-pitch climbing, you must master the basics: tying in, top-rope and lead belaying, and abseiling. You don’t need to be an expert—a 5b crag climber can certainly discover multi-pitching. Étienne systematically organizes an evaluation outing beforehand if you have never climbed with him.
For climbers without prior experience, a “first multi-pitch” package is available: Étienne leads the climb, manages all the belay stations, and guides you on an easy route (4c-5a) within your reach.
